Welcome to Nether Diddling, a quiet English village where everybody knows everybody — and everybody knows everybody else’s business.
At least, they thought they did.
When anonymous poison letters begin dropping through letterboxes, the accusations range from the insulting to the downright personal.
Before long, suspicion is spreading through the village, old grievances are resurfacing, and almost everyone has an opinion about who might be responsible.
From the regulars at The Frog & Grasshopper to the familiar faces behind the counters of the village shops, nobody is entirely safe from either the letters or the gossip surrounding them.
As Nether Diddling tries to uncover the culprit, one thing becomes very clear.
Where's Brian?
Something strange is happening in Nether Diddling.
Garden ornaments are disappearing from their rightful places and turning up elsewhere—sometimes in positions their owners would rather not discuss.
Naturally, everyone has a theory.
Meanwhile, Little Tipping is preparing to host a wine and cheese evening, Dot and Twig aren't speaking, Marshmallow appears to be getting rather fat, and Brian Taplow has somehow managed to go missing.
Soon there are accusations, arguments, a search party and rather more wine than anyone intended.
Just another perfectly ordinary few days in Nether Diddling.
The Nether Diddling Beast
Someone—or something—is causing trouble in Nether Diddling.
Flowers are being destroyed, tyres are mysteriously going flat and a shadowy figure dressed in black has been spotted after dark.
Then talk of a strange creature begins.
Before long, the villagers have a name for it: the Shadow Beast.
With the church flower show approaching, rumours spreading and suspicion falling on the mysterious occupant of a nearby cottage, Nether Diddling is once again determined to get to the bottom of things.
Well, most of them are.
Others are far more interested in exactly why Marshmallow is continuing to get bigger.
Welcome back to Nether Diddling, where a few damaged flowers can become a village crisis—and a glimpse in the darkness can grow into something considerably larger.
All That Jazz
Nether Diddling has decided to enter a choir competition.
What could possibly go wrong?
Quite a lot, as it happens.
Grace Pashell is determined to put together a choir capable of doing the village proud, but finding the right singers is only the beginning.
Rehearsals, rival villages and an astonishing discovery in the most unlikely of places soon send expectations soaring.
By the time the Nether Diddling choir reaches Claistow, everyone is ready for their big moment.
Unfortunately, so are a blackout, an airhorn and two men with rather more interest in a theatre curtain than anyone would like.
With village pride at stake, Nether Diddling is about to discover whether the show really can go on.
And back home, Marshmallow has plans of her own.
